I am able to undertake estimating
for all type of building works using various software estimating sytems
I have available. The choice of which one to use will be dependant upon the clients end requirement.
If I have produced a design for a client I do recommend that the client has a “detailed bill of quantities” produced for their project.
Builders will be aware of this terminology, but for those who
don’t it is a fully detailed breakdown showing individual costs for all elements of the building work to be undertaken. (see inserted extract opposite)
The purpose – once the project has been designed, and a detail B of Q produced, we have a design and
build cost for the work.
At this stage the client can ensure that the building costs for their project falls in line with the budget they have available.
Many times in the past I have produced a design and clients have issued drawings to several builders and when the quotes come in they find they cannot afford any of them which means builders have put a lot of time and effort in to producing a quote and do not even stand a chance of getting any work.
The other reason is builders may interpret drawings in their own way and possibly different from another.
By taking the produced B of Q and removing the priced elements, the builders only have to fill in the blank spaces and cost the document through.
This means that all builders price exactly the same items, and any chance of different interpretation is removed.
It also enables builders to return their price much quicker because all the quantities are already in the document.

Example
The above sheet shows a typical page of a priced bill of quantities.
Unpriced is exactly the same but with no rates/costs.
