Quantity surveying (very basic overview) for those who are not aware, is basically an extension of estimating and used mainly on commercial and larger projects where the contract period extends more than say a couple of months.
A bill of quantities would be used
and each month the surveyor would go to site and evaluate the amount
of work done for the purposes of making a payment for the work to
the contractor.
In addition any additional work required by the client would be evaluated.
Some builder clients prefer to have the quantities for projects taken off of drawings so as they can put their own prices to it.
Personally I have been a quantity surveyor on the following projects
for larger construction companies.
1. Motorway construction including drainage and bridges. (M4 Swindon - Hungerford)
2. Squadron offices, workshops, hanger (Portland Naval Base)
3. Sewage pumping station and large diameter pipework (Bridgewater)
4. Dual carriageway including large culvert construction (Marsh, Devon)
5. Motorway service area (M5 Exeter)
6. Box reservoir (Wiveliscombe, Devon)
7. Gas pipelines (Wales, Kent)
8. Tunnel projects, (London, Wales)
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
I do limit the project management services I provide to projects that I have been involved in from the concept of the design through to construction.
